Self employed – thoughts

Introduction…

Just like many people, you might be asking yourself, how is it to depend only on yourself? The thought of leaving the known might be frightening, however exciting the prospect is. Knowledge of getting paid every week or month is very comforting regardless of how unfulfilling you feel or how much this job bores you.

What does self employed actually means?

It simply means that you are working for yourself and you are classed as sole trader, even if you have not informed HMRC Revenue( Her Majesty’s Revenue and Custom) yet. You can also form a limited company however you are then classed as both the owner and employee of the company.

Things worth considering before you fully commit yourself…

Whatever it is you wish to do or pursue, in majority of cases there always be a competition and always be someone who is already doing it. If you have not attempted yet but only have an idea in your mind, go ahead and try it. Obviously if you want to perform a surgery and you are working as a gardener it is not recommended you carry on with it, before you acquire necessary training/ qualification. However if it is less extreme example take a holiday or arrange it during your days off.  This short trail, might show you whether you actually enjoy it, as much as you have imagined.

Another simple thing to do is to take time and research. Speak to people already doing it, find out what they are struggling with, read about it and start forming a plan.

Finally I would recommend to plan your finance and not expecting too much at the beginning. Unfortunately, the reality of it is that lack of preparation and high hopes can be your worst enemy. I am sure that everyone starting something is going through hardship at the beginning however you can burn out very easily if those two are not set right.

What is there to loose?

The stakes can be very high, especially when you have financial commitments, children, status of some sort, set expectations of your lifestyle, friends who not necessarily share your passions or dreams, your spouse etc. All those factors and more might be affected in one way or another and all those definitely influence your decision.

Ask yourself however, if you only had one more day to live, would you at least try?

In life, regretting things that we have not done or tried could mean that one day, laying in our bed when we are old and no longer strong enough we might meet disappointment and unfulfillment.

“The only calibration that counts is how much heart people invest, how much they ignore their fears of being hurt or caught out or humiliated. And the only thing people regret is that they didn’t live boldly enough, that they didn’t invest enough heart, didn’t love enough. Nothing else really counts at all.”
― Ted Hughes

To sum up…

Unfortunately life is not always that simple and giving one answer would be unfair. The only thing that is worth saying is that if you really want something in life, whether it is  being self employed or pursuing a dream carrer make sure that you are happy! And if you feel inside that this is not what you want from life than attempt, plan and start changing your life as there will not be another chance.
